Zebra eyes!

I originally found the idea for this project over on Elementary Art Fun. I do these with 5th grade each year and it's a great lesson for teaching the color wheel, watercolor technique, as well as focusing (no pun intended!) on the parts of the eye and how to draw them properly. These are always a favorite! 

Zebras!

This is the project that never ends!  Seems like we've been working on these zebras in kindergarten forever!  I think the end result is worth it though!  Have a look!

Each set of stripes was one lesson so you can imagine how long these took! :)

Who says shamrocks have to be green? :)

I attempted a freehand shamrock drawing last week with 1st grade...

epic fail.... :(

So, I felt I needed to redeem the shamrock by pulling out my heart cookie cutters and trying it again!  This time with third grade.  We are using the shamrock project to learn about analogous colors and blending.  Once they finished tracing the hearts, with sides and bottoms touching, they added stems.  I handed out color wheels and we discussed analogous colors and blending.  The they went to town, coloring with crayola color sticks!  The blending almost makes some of them glow!  I'll post more pics as they finish up!

Art By Me fundraiser 2013! 5th grade parrots

I know I do this project every year, but I have to admit, it's one of my favorites!!  It's perfect for teaching drawing, proportion, color, and the list goes on!  This year's parrots, as always, turned out fantastic!  I love them more every year!  This is for our fundraiser project that we do through a local company called Art By Me.  It's fantastic because students can have their artwork "published" onto a product they love.  Check it out for your school at www.artbyme.com.

 I gave them color wheels to help them figure out which colors would blend well into others.  Most of them chose to do them in color wheel order, but I gave them the freedom to do them in any order they wished.

3rd grade owls

Third graders have been working on these beautiful owls for the past few weeks.  We drew the owls together, then discussed the color wheel to determine what colors would work well next to each other.  We learned about complementary colors, analogous colors, and how these colors work together.  I think this is one of my favorite third grade projects!

Zebras!

Remember those zebras we were working on in 5th grade a few weeks ago?  Here they are! I encouraged them to use analogous colors in each stripe, but I had a couple of students that wanted theirs to look realistic, so I let them use black instead.   

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICECREAM!!

4th grade created these triple scoop ice cream cones.  They look delicous enough to eat!  We used analogous colors to shade the scoops, along with a little hatching and cross hatching to resemble a pen and ink drawing.
